Food for thought

I’ve never been to New York …

… and the longing in you awakens again …

What is your New York? What are your aspirations? What dreams could you realize? What confinement would you like to free yourself from? What breakout or departure do you want to make?

And what would have happened if Udo Jürgens had been coaching us at Transformationsmanufaktur? What would we have asked?

Perhaps we would have asked Udo in the classic systemic tradition: “Udo, what could you do to ABSOLUTELY ensure that you NEVER break out of the confinement? That your desires ALWAYS remain desires?”

And Udo would have answered the following after his initial irritation at the absurd question:

  • I can’t talk to my sweetheart about my dreams – because maybe she’s also longing for less confinement, for freedom, for New York? Then we should both be happy! And when the woman asks “was what?” I say “nothing”!
  • Also, of course, I’m not talking to my employer – because maybe they’re watching me as a great employee who can temporarily support the new office in New York?
  • But I have to ponder what others – colleagues, friends, maybe the affair – think about my longings. That makes me sad and tired and I don’t have the energy to look for ways to get to New York! More brooding, then happiness won’t happen to me either.
  • Or I ponder intensely about my fears of what could go wrong, that the money won’t be enough. Then I explain to myself well enough that it won’t work! Logic is logic.
  • I can also immerse myself in my frustration, in the frustration about the blame that clearly lies with my wife, the money, my daughter, the situation. It’s always someone else’s fault! Ha!
  • Or I could distract myself thoroughly, every evening, with Dalli Dalli … so that I dampen or rather suffocate thoughts and longings. Let them die, the dreams and longings!

Perhaps our questions open Udo’s eyes a little. And he begins to enter into an inner dialog about his longings, fears and frustrations. Into a real deep dialog with himself, perhaps with his private environment, perhaps even with his professional environment.

Perhaps something completely new will emerge in him from the dialog. Perhaps Udo will discover an environment that supports him. Perhaps he will find completely different ways of looking at things. Perhaps other paths to New York will open up – happy ones together.

And suddenly freedom arises out of nowhere, expansiveness in life, longings come true. For Udo himself, for his loved ones. And then Udo sees how much happiness life can bring …

What is your New York? What are your aspirations? What dreams could you realize? What confinement would you like to free yourself from? What breakout or departure do you want to make?
